The "hole" truth.
Hole size in a colander is very important. Large holes allow water to escape quickly, but also make it easy for food to squeeze out. Small holes keep the food in, but create a slow drain of water which means the food continues to over cook in hot water. In our design tests, the best performing designs used mesh style materials with tiny holes 2 to 3 mm large. The HOLM colander has 2.3mm holes to give it a good balance between water flow,food retention, and strength. The mesh doesn't bend even when filled with large fruit.
The right design.
I know what you are thinking - a colander is just a bowl with holes. What's the big deal? Most of us suffer with a lousy colander that we bought at one time or another. Ones with holes that are so big that pasta falls through right into the sink. Or ones that drain too slowly and ruin food. Or ones that have a base that blocks the drain so that water washes back into your freshly cooked pasta. Or that are a huge pain to wash or that are a little too small. At HOLM we designed our colander to be the last colander you'll ever buy. It handles pasta, fruit, vegetables, your kitchen cabinets, and your dishwasher like a champ.
Reliably Sturdy.
When designing our colander, we experimented with different materials; ceramics, plastics, and stainless steel. We also tried several different shapes, including some innovative collapsible versions. In the end, we found that the best material was one we trusted: Stainless steal. The best, most reliable performing shape, was the traditional bowl shape. Our design innovation wasn't in reinventing what already worked well, but in making the best quality colander possible. The HOLM colander looks pretty and does the job. Sturdy handles wont get hot easily when draining hot foods, and make it easy to lower the loaded colander into a sink (even when wearing cooking mitts!)
Great for washing fruits and vegetables.
Washing fruits and vegetables is the best way to reduce your risks for food-borne illness. There's no need for expensive detergents. Research at the University of Florida has shown that the most effective way to clean fruits and vegetables is to soak for 2 minutes in clean cold water with a 10 percent vinegar solution, then rinse under running water in a colander. This process was found to reduce bacteria by 90 percent and viruses by about 95 percent.

I looked at all the options for this product and because it wasn’t the most expensive I thought it would be poorer quality but to my surprise it was very good quality with no rough edges and not super thin steel! I would definitely buy it again and recommend it to friends!

I really don't use the smallest one that much, but the other two are very nicely sized and work well for a range of tasks. They are well made and sturdy, and have held up well so far to repeated use and washings. The separate feet help prevent any damming in the sink when draining foods, yet are securely attached/fastened to the rest of the colander.

This is a quality stainless steel colander set! I looked at comparable items before buying this set. The price point, quantity of colanders in a set (some had 2, some had 4), as well as the size of each, were factors I took into account. This set, in my opinion, has the ideal size and number of pieces. It has a wide girth, which I like since it allows me to spread out the meat or chicken when I clean them so they may be thoroughly cleaned or dried without piling up on top of one another. I also like that they have holes all over, rather than just in a few places, and that they are neither too wide nor too small, so that water can easily pass through and any remaining tiny pieces of meat won't get caught in the cleaning process because the water can pass through easily. I also found out that this is a better choice to place fried chicken straight from the pan/skillet. It prevents the fried chicken from becoming soggy (which typically happens when you lay it in a dish with a paper towel to drain the oil) and drains the oil better than placing a paper towel under a dish. This should last for many years with normal use since it's stainless steel. Highly recommend it! Thank you!

These are great colanders... but they're not sieves, so don't expect to be able to strain small grains like quinoa nor rice. Although described as a "mesh," they aren't a woven mesh; rather, punched stainless steel. This can be seen in the product photos. This is great for increased airflow. Too many colanders have too few holes. These have smaller holes all around, and is one of the reasons why i chose these.The product description incorrectly states: "This steel strainer set is great for washing, rinsing or draining pasta, rice, quinoa, grains". Pasta, perhaps, but you're better off using something like the Westmark 16392260 Stainless Steel Pan Pot Strainer for that. Quinoa, rice, and other grains would be better strained using a woven mesh, such as the RSVP Endurance Stainless Steel Mesh Basket.Aside from that, they work great for things that one might expect to use a colander: Washing fruit, berries, veggies, etc. Or for drying basil, harvesting your garden crops, picking small quantities of fruit like apples, grapes, plums, etc. I also use them for storing fruit and veggies either on the counter, or in the refrigerator.I didn't expect to find the smallest colander useful, as it's so small, but have found uses for it, like washing cherries, and holding small fruits in the refrigerator.These clean well in the dishwasher, although might be more difficult to clean by hand as the bottom side is unpolished, and would probably snag on a cloth or sponge.They're well made, but they're not tanks. With reasonable care, they should last a long time.
