Product Description

The 3M Elite Non-Vacuum Random Orbital Sanders combine durable, lightweight construction and operator ergonomics around a powerful precision-balanced motor for professional performance and a swirl-free finish, great for high-production industrial environments where dust extraction is not required.

From the Manufacturer

3M engineers designed performance and ergonomics both into the 3M Elite Non-Vacuum Random Orbital Sanders, which are loaded with features to reduce vibration and noise and provide greater wrist support and operator comfort. The comfortable rubber grip featuring 3M Gripping Material, curved-throttle alloy steel lever, and built-in wrist support provide comfortable control, while the recessed lever platform eliminates pinch and pressure points on the operator’s palm. The speed control dial is conveniently located on the side and thumb-controlled. The lighter-weight tool has a composite cover that extends to the base to absorb and reduce vibration and keeps tools in service by preventing cracked housings, while the internal muffler helps reduce noise and won’t break off.

3M Elite Non-Vacuum Random Orbital Sanders optimize sanding and surface preparation on many surfaces, including wood, metal prep for paint, fiberglass and composite materials, and many other substrates. Also known as dual action (D/A) sanders, these industrial-grade tools rotate the abrasive disc and disc pad in two simultaneous overlapping oval patterns so no single abrasive particle follows the same path twice, resulting in a swirl-free finish, even when sanding against the grain.

Pneumatic sanders are also called air sanders and run on power generated by an air compressor. Non-vacuum models such as these are not connected to a vacuum system and are used in applications where dust extraction is not a concern.

I've owned custom woodworking companies for 30 years now. A good 23 years ago I was just reminded I purchased 2 dozen Ingersoll Rand orbitals for the guys to use. After a few years the guys started taking mine out of my tool box so I started buying different model and eventually different brands. Every time I went to use my sander some numb nuts is using my new sander again. So I went through quit a few. The last one I purchased is this one. I figured I would bring this one home and keep it nice for when I wanted a good tool. For this kind of money now days this is a very expensive orbital. Might as well get festool for this money. from the day I bought it this thing never worked correctly and the third time I used it it just stopped completely. I took the filter out then the baffle the last time I was beating with a hammer to get it to spin. Out of all the sanders I've ever used this has been by far the worse piece of garbage Black and decker or even a $30 harbor freight blows this thing away. The guys in the shop are still using The 23 year old Ingersoll Rand that haven't been stolen. As soon as I'm done with this review I'm going straight to Ingersoll Rand and ordering me a new Ingersoll Rand and so should you. Do not waste a penny on this junk. I'm not sure if I should crush it with my forklift or let an employee steal and think they got away with a good sander. with the hammer marks they might not. Let this be clear for 3M's response that a hammer has only come once in 30 year on my tools as last resort so I don't want to hear " no wonder he used a hammer" that's in Goofy's voice from Disney. I can't wait to see 3M at the next machine show.

This sander didn't last more than 3 months. I guess iI know now what 3M stands for; 3 months. Worst tool purchase I have ever made. I will never buy another 3M product. I have Dynabrade sanders that have lasted more than a decade.

So far I love it. I ordered the hook and loop pad to go with it as I change grits of paper a lot. Comfortable, seems well made, and sands nicely. It doesn't have a Vac function but the holes in sandpaper needed for hat purpose are what often wear down the hooks on the pad. I'm coming off an electric to this pneumatic one and so far I like it.

Pretty sweet sander. Higher rpm's than my other sander which translates into faster cutting. No swirl marks.
