The threaded part lets the backing plate spin when any force is applied. Took it off and threw the part away.

I am a high end professional polisher and used these plates for small areas daily. These last well over 1,000 hours and I interchange pads often. Great product, only flaw would be the glue holding the velcro eventually fails but only after thousands of pad changes.
