The first time use, the brush needs to be prepared first: Press the brush hair, relax the hair. Put in warm water. Let it sit for at least 3 minutes. Then wash away any falling hair. Wash after use to remove the ink in the hair before use it, wash in the water first before dipping it in the ink.
FAQ 1: About Shedding
It's made 100% by hand from the beginning to the end. It's common for new handmade brushes to shed hair. After dozens of use, the shedding should stop.
Care to prevent shedding:
Before each use, immerse in the water first for 5-10 minutes. Remove excess hair, then use.

Although the product was heavily packaged the item arrived with a broken box. The box is cheaply made.

I’m no shodo master but these are decent enough. They look good, feel good, and come in a lovely box. They maintain their shape just fine and they’re helping me as I crawl my way through writing some kanji. Apart from a little shedding, I’m just sad they don’t have some smaller sizes available in this style - I would have bought more.

The only reason I am buying these brush pens is, in the product picture it says "Shanlianhubi (善璉湖筆)" on all of them, which means they are made in a specific location according to certain standard. However the items I received have different words carved ..."从優米"...three characters that don't even make sense to me.The brush sizes are also different from the product description - they measure 4.8, 4.2 and 3.8 cm. Albeit the smaller sizes, the 'S' brush still looks too big to write small sized characters (~1.5 cm). I haven't tried writing with these pens so I could be wrong.Sending the right back.

I was actually looking for a fairly stiff brush, and these aren't them.BUT! these are really nice to paint with. They need to be loaded pretty well (so, pretty saturated) before they release my ink consistently. And then, they sort of let go a bit too easily. So, the tip is quite pointy; but you can't get a super thin line because too much ink is released for that.Think, gentle, satiny, flowing strokes (with a bit of re-shaping, re-tipping in the dry end of the ink dish between strokes). I kind of couldn't stop making random brush strokes with these because it was such a pleasant experience and the results were very nice . . . .just not stiff (not "wolf-like" . . .. more, imagine, squirrel with dreams of snap). They do hold their shape well, in the conical sense; just not in the straight sense. Also, just FYI, the handles are kind of on the fat end of the spectrum. It felt a bit clumsy; but I'm sure I can get used to them . . .. . they're not gynormous . . . just thick. . . .. wait, I'll measure . . . . . 7/16" diameter on the handle of the large one.So, I would say these brushes have a distinct character that is a great part of a larger toolbox, and they're really nice to paint with. But I wouldn't consider them as first or only brushes. Not quite versatile enough for that.Think Cadillac, not Porsche

I’ve used several quality sumo-e brushes and these stand up. They come in a pretty and impressive box.

I like the shape, the handle and the texture and weight of the bristles but they shed so much I stopped using them.

I don’t letter with brushes, I use them for painting leather dye, the sharp (fine) point is great for fine detail and the brushes load very well so I don’t run out of dye like other brushes I have. Very good. Looking for smaller and larger brushes too. Thank you, Buz Bailey.

Wonderful wolf hair brushes, they hold a fine tip very well and bounce back to their original shape! Great for Chinese calligraphy

Water turns yellow when I washed the just received brush, the so-called wolf hair looks more probable to be styled to make look like wolf hair. The bamboo was also inferior in quality. I will never buy any writing brush again from amazon.

Very nice looking brushes. The case is cheap but from a distance it looks nice. I haven't had any issues with the hairs falling out. These are good for practicing with.
