At first I was surprised because I was expecting some kind of black painted chalkboard type surface, but these are plastic. I tested out the complimentary set of colored markers that came with the boards, and also a generic white chalk-marker set.Both marker sets worked well on it -- went on and didn't come off if you lightly brushed over it, and wiped off with a paper towel, however there is a shadow of what was written previously.
