I've been an Arduino tinkerer for a while, and many of my home automation projects involve small servos and displays that eat up more power than the dev boards can source. These regulators make it easy to provide an independently regulated 5V power from 7.2v and 12v battery packs. I've found this particularly useful to drive 5V devices from a solar-charged LiFePO4 cell. While I do have some regulator boards with more functionality (e.g., integrated voltage monitor and adjustable output), they're more suited to prototyping, rather than to final assembly (where these L7805s are small and simple).

Well I am not much of a engineer or electrical whiz so bear in mind I only do bench experimenting and light hobby circuit building. My model train layout can always use another Arduino and it's nice to pull from existing power and drop it sufficiently to power one. Towards that end I just hooked up input voltage of around 16V and was able to read the near 5V output I was hoping for. The unit didn't generate too much warmth at those numbers and even powering a small circuit had no troubles. So this is good for my light needs!
