I didn’t buy this filler set for the intended use, but instead for my Fluval Edge 6 gallon tank. I figured I could cut the foam to fit my filler setup, and I was right. The foam for this filter kit is roughly 2” thick, 5” wide, and 9” tall. In my application, I needed to remove about half the ceramic media from one of the two included bags to get it to fit in the filter assembly. However, the included filter media works great at maintaining crystal clear water. It was very easy to modify this for my use and to fit my tank well. This media should give me a few changes and is an excellent value in my application.

Complete filtration replacement kit for a very good price and you get two of them! I needed one for my Flex 9 gallon and this one works perfectly. Excellent value and quality.

I bought this specifically because I own 3 Fluval Flex 9-gallon aquariums (each housing an exotic male betta). However, on arrival I was a little surprised! The large black foam block is substantially bigger than the originals that came with the aquariums and doesn't really fit properly without severely restricting the water flow. Now as bettas don't like a high-water flow that normally wouldn't be a problem but to reduce the flow to a low trickle? With brand new pumps? I had to cut the blocks in half from the top to the bottom, reducing the depth front to back of the media for them to fit properly, without the severe water flow restriction. The tanks are heavily planted with live plants which obviously virtually eliminates nitrite and nitrate produced naturally as part of the nitrogen cycle from the waste, and Bettas produce very minimal waste to contaminate the water anyway. I'm seriously contemplating abandoning the inbuilt filter system in the rear compartment and using an internal filter unit in the main aquarium area that has a low water flow because this filter media is obviously NOT designed for the Flex aquarium but in all probability is really designed for the Fluval SPEC aquarium - packaging says it's for use in both types of Fluval aquarium. It's a shame because the flex aquariums are perfect for the Betta set up with plenty of space for the Betta to explore, especially as the tanks have a fair number of live plants. I would have thought that Fluval Hagen would have at least had a replacement filter block that, like the original that came with the aquariums brand new, would actually fit without having to cut the media with an exacto knife. When I compared the width of the blocks to those that originally came with the tanks they are, indeed, substantially wider.
