We purchased this item as a Christmas present for our non verbal autistic grandchild. He enjoyed playing with them and it kept him entertained for quite awhile.

I had just discovered ocean or sea drums lately and was surprised to see this on my Vine for children. I got this set for myself to test before going out and purchasing a more expensive one. I can see an adult or older child (thinking later teens) enjoying these for their original purpose. Smaller children I would think would only care that it makes noise. Another reviewer mentioned if it gets broken and the balls getting out having safety issues, and I agree. That is something I would be concerned about with small children as they are just plastic, so they would need to be watched while using them.With that said, in order to hear a sea sound, you have to use your imagination a bit, which is another reason I would go with older children. I am finding it does sound like the sea IF you turn them fairly slowly and let the balls slide very slowly around. This is going to be a great thing for me to have when I am keyed up at night and cannot get to sleep as it forces you to slow down and relax and listen carefully and use a steady hand with it. I can see it being great when I have focus issues also. I give it a 5 for what it is supposed to be, and I guess for a child who just wants something noisy it would be. I doubt a very small child will be able to tolerate having the patience for what it is really designed to do, but that would be at the parents' discretion.

As musicians, my husband and I like to encourage love of music in the youth. These little plastic ocean drums are a fun addition to a kid’s percussion kit.These circular drums have light weight hard plastic rims. The front is a clear plastic window, the back white cardboard. There is a cute ocean scene with clownfish and other sea denizens. The drum has multicolored plastic beads inside that slide around to produce the swishing wave sound.This is marketed for children and babies, but neither the product page nor the packaging have any safety information. There is no mention that if broken, the beads inside could be hazardous to small children. It also does not mention whether the plastic is BPA and phthalate free.These ocean drums are a fun musical toy. I would recommend supervision of smaller children if you let them play with these.
