A Masu in Japan is at once a measure, a concept, and in this case, a sake drinking vessel. The first time I encountered one in a Japanese restaurant, I thought that a glass or ceramic sake cup would be coming next. Traditionally, the Masu box itself is meant to be a drinking vessel, and the inevitable spillage is thought to encourage prosperity. The word "Masu" in Japanese translates to "growth."Masu boxes made in Japan are made from a Japanese Cypress variant, and can be crazy expensive. These may have the form, but they are light and probably made from pine. They are the right size and seem netaly mae, but they lack the element of authenticity that a Japanese Masu would have.Nice to have, but not the real deal.

These Sewoart Japanese sake cups have a traditional design, crafted from wood and shaped like small boxes. While they can be a bit awkward to use, they’re fun because of their cultural authenticity. The wood cups are meant to keep sake warm longer compared to ceramic cups, which is a nice feature. However, they feel a bit cheap, likely due to the type of wood used, which isn’t specified in the product description. Overall, they’re a unique and traditional addition to enjoying sake but could benefit from more clarity about the materials.
