The DTLHCNCT 180 LB ON/Off Magnets, Magnetic Welding Holder, Multipurpose Switch Magnet for Lifting and Handling, Metal Screening and positioning is useful but, it is not close to 180 pounds of magnetic pulling power. It's decent enough for light stand-off holding for projects but typically requires additional magnets or clamps for effective holding. The build of this assembly is fair quality but, it's just strong enough for very light projects. I do not recommend it be used for suspending materials like the advertising shows as it could lead to a safety issue. I'm pretty disappointed in the DTLHCNCT magnetic holder due to its lack of magnetic strength!

The product description here at Amazon states that the lifting capacity of this magnet is 180 lbs; the enclosed instruction sheet specifies a "break away force" of 170 lbs and my own testing caused it to release it's hold at well under 100 lbs. Here is my testing process: I attached the magnet to the hook of a chain hoist and attached the magnet to a clean, unpainted, and smooth part of the top of a medium-sized machinist's vise that weighs approximately 120 lbs. The instructions specify that a thick metal is required for maximum capacity, and I believe this was the perfect test that I could bring about, given what I have available. The magnet continually released without even getting the vise fully off the ground at all. My chain hoist is the manual type which allows an extremely slow and precise control, and a very smooth lift.I confess that I really wanted this to work, as there are several projects around the house that it would have been very helpful in completing, but the items in question all weigh around 50 pounds or so and I question this magnet's ability to lift even that. The one-star product rating I'm giving it may be overly generous, as I am really quite cross with the manufacturer for grossly over-rating the capacity as they did. This company is not being truthful with their customers and does not deserve your business or your money. Sadly I cannot recommend this product or company to anyone.

The jobs that this magnet can be used for is limitless, I have used it for so many random things to date. I like the on/off twist of the handle, that is rather quite convenient. This magnet will in no way, hold nor pick up 180lb. If you plan on trying this, watch your toes.I would like to use this magnet to try fishing in the spring, see what kind of treasures I can find.

I have a magnet identical to this one but about four times its size. The larger one is an absolute beast when it comes to holding power, and I’ve used it to pull large dents on vehicles. With an advertised weight capacity of 180 pounds, I had lots of uses for a miniature version of this magnet.Sadly, it isn’t the powerhouse it claims to be. Even on half inch steel, I’m able to pull it off without that much effort. My larger magnet is rated for 220 pounds, while this one probably tops out at 40 pounds. It would be almost useless for junk fishing, save for very small, easy to retrieve objects. The on/off feature works well, though, and I use it to collect metal shavings around my drill press. If you really need a powerful magnet, opt for a larger one. 3.5 stars

I couldn't get it to reliably lift more than 30 lbs. I've taken off a lot of stars for claiming 180lbs. That's simply not true.I've also had much smoother disengagement switches on other magnets like this. I don't think there is much precision in the manufacturing process.

The magnet itself is a good piece. It's great that you can turn it of and on with no charging. The enamel is very well done. The weight of the magnet is not overdone. The handle in which is how you turn the magnet on and off is very thick and sturdy. The carabiner is aluminum though it's very thick and sturdy enough for the purpose it will be used for. My only issue with the magnet lies with it's magnetic field. It doesn't seem to have the power as stated in it's description. I certainly wouldn't use it to pick up the amount of weight stated in its description. Otherwise it's a nice magnet and for what I was looking for it definitely gets the job done.

This product works great with smooth operation of the switch, but it's not NEARLY as strong as it says it is. For what I'm planning on using it for, mostly feather boards probably, it'll work fine, but if I needed it to work at the 180lb force it advertises, there's no way it would hold up.

The problem with magnets is that they work! For larger magnets picking up smaller items this can be a nuisance because you can't remove small items, such as metal shavings, from the magnet. Industrially electro-magnets are used-just turn off the power and everything drops. This is a much smaller, but very strong version, without the electro part. The magnet, I think a strong rare earth type, is enclosed in a small box that blocks the magnetic attraction. Push down the button and turn 90 degrees opens the bottom of the cover (internally) and you can pick up your items. Turn the button back, the attraction is blocked, and your items fall away. You need this! The only unanswered questions I have regard how high a temperature and whether or not you can use it underwater. Fortunately for me, most of my applications are ambient temperature and in a dry environment, but it would be nice if the manufacturer would place this data on the instructions.

Quality is decent, everything works, knob is smooth to turn. But there is no way this thing is 180lbs pulling force, attached to my welding table or 1/4" thick excavator thumb I can pull it off with 1 hand, maybe 30lbs of force if I had to guess?
