I needed one of these specifically for building the steam launch engine kit from Little Machine Shop, and it worked really well for cutting the valve slots. I haven't used it on steel yet, but it did a great job on brass - the part from the kit is 1018 steel, but I wanted to test it on brass first, and it cuts really cleanly. (Shallow slots in a small part on a rotary table on the mill.) Should handle 1018 steel just fine, based on how it does CS360 brass.
