Separate pins for the photodiode and output stage result in TTL compatible saturation voltage and high speed operation.
Where desired the Vcc and Vo terminals may be tied together to achieve conventional photo darlington operation. A base access terminal allows a gain bandwidth adjustment to be made. Package Including
10pcs*6N138

Price was good. Delivery came early. Used to build a proprietary Midi-to-TRS cable for a Strymon Cloudburst. So far my design only provides a midi "in" function, which is all I wanted. I was motivated by Strymon's $40 price for a cable. Between the 6N138s and 4 metal 5 pin din plugs (also from Amazon), I'm in for $17. I did have the rest of the materials on hand. As you DIYers know. Built the first one on perf board and the second on vero board. (To the technically minded, the circuit is powered from the "ring" of the TRS.)

1. The item delivered was not the item shown the product description.2. The item delivered is marked as a 6N138, possibly the one made by "liteon" but it's not possible to tell. The liteon specs are good, but this IC is terrible. The output is very noisy. It's bad enough that I'm not sure it will work in my circuit, and I've decided to spend more at an authentic IC distributor's site.

I built 2 arduino powered MIDI controllers. I used these to isolate the MIDI input jack as per MIDI specifications. They worked perfectly for my application.
