I tested filtered water. 0% sugar.I tested fermented water kefir (homemade) 6% sugar (apparently normal)I tested pre-fermented water kefir (homemade) 10% sugarI wanted to test my water kefir because it seems to be so sweet even after a 7 day ferment. I checked to see what was normal for water kefir that was not sweetened in a 2nd ferment. 6% is right on the nose. After further investigation that's about 3 gm of sugar per cup. Similar to a green apple.

Works as described. Calibrated it with distilled water and was easily able to take a Brix reading with no issues.

Disclaimer: Not a scientist; despised science in school. Never used a salinity refractometer before this. While visiting a relative for a week and drinking a lot of their well water, I found myself retaining water/swelling even though there was no change to my diet or physical activity and the altitude was the same there as it is at home. I got the idea to test the sodium levels in their water next time I visited.I bought this refractometer, calibrated it with distilled water, tested my drinking water at home and recorded the results. I added different amounts of table salt to my water and watched the levels go off-the-charts in the viewfinder! So, I took this with me (along with some distilled for re-calibration) next time I visited. I was 100% correct! Their well water had an elevated level of sodium. I bring jugs of water when I visit now, or they have it on hand for me…problem solved.

So far I have used sucrose brix refractometers and now this sodium chloride one. I like this design because it is easy to calibrate and check, easy to view in light and easy to clean.Checked with a few different solutions, worked great and the calibration know is stiff enough to hold a long time. For price, great value and worth it!

This works very well and has fixed my problem of not knowing my alcohol content in my home brew, I do hydrometer reedings but was not feeling it gave me a proper reading but feel confident with doing both readings very easy to use

Used for my very small scale (8 taps) hobby sugaring. I had previously been going by temperature and my syrup always seemed a bit thin. This instrument confirmed that I needed to boil it down further than what the thermometer was telling me.
