Iron made from hardened tool steel hardened and tempered to Rockwell 55-60. Bevel ground to 25 degrees. Iron will need final honing to achieve a razor sharp edge

Refused my uncle’s antic plan.

I bought this iron to replace the one in an older English Stanley 5 1/2. The back of the iron took a good while to flatten using DMT diamond stones. I then sharpened the bevel up to 12000 grit. Although it is a little thicker then the Stanley blade it fit this plane perfectly Simply put it is cutting great in cherry, as good as a well sharpened Japanese finishing plane. I did not use the ruler trick, which would have shortened the sharpening time, but I did put a small camber on the iron. The bottom line, the blade felt relatively hard and took a very sharp edge. I can't speak as to how long it will stay sharp but as of now. This is a very good deal.

Back is pretty flat and the blade is fairly sharp, ready for a fine stone. Nice and fat too. Now I love my #6 again.

When I couldn't find any wide plane blades like this in stock @ other stores I have this a try and have been pleasantly surprised how well it's held up, even planing carbonized maple!

I should have seen this nick before I opened it.It is really a nice thick blade. It wasn't until I was flattening the back side that the nick popped out. Really bad.I would give this a 2 or 3 star but it did clean up on the CBN wheel really well and like I said my fail.I'll update when I finish sharpening it.

Maybe I just got lucky but it came ratherwell machined, didn't take much at all to get flat and honed, and so far seems to hold an edge as good as wood river blades

But you may need to modify your plane if you are replacing a thinner blade.

Plane iron is tempered to soft in middle and correct on outer edges, won't hold an edge in the center.
