The enclosed section below the opening is too long. The core sample is very difficult to remove. I want to see the sample, not spend 10 minutes cleaning out the tube.

The product looks solid with nice welds and caps on the handle ends. The opening is about 5 inches from the bottom of the probe which makes it harder to push soil samples up to the opening, especially if your soil is compacted. I needed to use it so I didn’t have time to return it so I had to take a grinder to it and cut the bottom then sharpen it for it to work.

So I asked my friend who works in the field for a large commercial landscape maintenance company if he has ever found a hydrometer that works - because I haven’t. His response surprised me. He said he’s never used a hydrometer because his low tech soil sampler works just fine. I asked him what the soil sampler was and he showed me a tool exactly like this one from Amazon. As he explains it, this tool is incredibly simple to use: you just push it into the ground a few inches, twist it and pull up a soil sample. By looking at the sample, you can tell whether the soil below ground is dry or wet, whether there’s fungus present, and if there’s a problem with grubs or other insects. It could not be simpler. No moving parts, no electronics, no sensors. Old school and yet very effective. He said the only problem is that they used to be inexpensive but now these simple tools cost a fortune. When I saw this one on Amazon for about a third of the price of what he told me they cost now, I grabbed it right away. And I’m really glad I did. It’s solidly built, very sturdy and well made, and has a sharpened end for driving it into the ground (it comes with a rubber cap to cover the sharp edge when not in use) - as well as two rubber caps on the handle bar to protect your hands from any sharp edges. In short, it’s a simple, solid, well machined tool.Plus it appears to have some kind of Teflon – like coating on the inside which releases any soil sample you pull very easily. I am thrilled to have gotten this and I highly recommend it.

Works great but the window cut out for the soil sample is very sharp, when removing the core sample sliced my finger pretty good. Otherwise love it & works great.

Let me begin by saying that I'm a man in my 50s and in good physical shape. Using tools that require a bit of strength and having the ability to stick with it for a while is a pretty good description of myself. But, more on that a bit later.I've been wanting to have my soil tested for years. I looked at several probes to take the samples. Some were short, requiring you to bend over, waaay too close to the ground, others had smaller T-handles which make pushing it into the ground difficult. This probe is made of stainless steel (which is suggested from testing labs for taking soil samples) and is very well-made. The T-handle is welded to the vertical probe and does not bend when pushing it into the soil. The tip has a tapered end designed to make it easier to push in. While I'm very pleased with the probe, I had difficulty using it in my clay soil. I expected I'd have to push hard to get a sample from several inches down, but I wasn't expecting to put my full weight on it and only go in 3-4 inches. Now note that I've dug trenches, valve holes, wire trenches, etc. for what seems like miles of sprinkler systems in this soil. Then, once the soil is in the probe, it's very difficult to get out or remove from the plug collecter. note to manufacturer: A plunger of some kind will be needed to remove the sample if your soil compacts in the tube like mine did. It's nothing to do with the product, just the physics of a compressed material inside a tube. All in all, this is a very well made tool. For those who are reading the review, my drawbacks on buying the tool are about how very hard it is to get a real sample out of soil that I really expected to be able to work with. I don't know how you can decide on how well it will work for you but, it could be hard, and it could be easy.Still... a 5 Star Tool.

I was surprised when I unpacked the box that this tool arrived in. I guess I wasn't expecting such a quality tool.I think this soil probe would last over many lifetimes, and the product description saying this tool is "heavy-duty" is completely accurate. Not knowing how easy it is to remove the soil plug, I filed down the sharp edges on the cut-out area, so I wouldn't cut myself. In hindsight I wouldn't have had to do any filing, because the plugs just fall out with a small tap on the ground.Until now, I hadn't realized how easy it is to take a soil sample.
