About this item

  • Multi-bandpass light pollution filter for astrophotography
  • Precise and sharp roll-off at light pollutant emission lines
  • Very high transmission (~90%) at major nebula emission lines
  • Multi-layers anti-reflection coating
  • CNC machined filter cell with aerospace grade aluminium and black anodised finish to extinguish reflections

Optolong L-Pro (L-Professional) is a multi-bandpass filter which selectively suppresses the transmission of light pollution lines. For example, mercury vapor lamps, high and low pressure sodium vapor lights and skyglow caused by emission from neutral oxygen in our atmosphere. L-Pro enhances the transmission of major emissions from nebula while offering great colour balance with its wide yet effective light pollution cutting transmission band. The balanced transmission allows objects with wide emission spectrum such as galaxies to be imaged with minimal colour cast (easier to correct in post-processing). Among the emission lines enhanced are OIII (496, 500nm), H-beta (486nm), NII (654, 658nm), H-alpha (656nm) and SII (672nm).

This filter is not suitable for an f/2 optical system (Celestron 8” HyperStar) or RASA. Due to bandpass shifting at fast focal ratios, it does not properly transmit H-alpha and OIII emissions, leading to poor image quality. Rather get a filter specifically designed for high-speed optics.

I like the Optolong L-enHance filter a lot, but it is pretty narrow in the Ha and OIII, so sometimes star colors are hard to preserve. This L-Pro filter is a decent compromise for my Bortle 7 suburban skies. I get good contrast in my images and fairly natural colors as well. I think this is a good filter for broadband targets like galaxies, star clusters and some comets. L-enHance is probably better for emission nebula like M57, NGC7000 and the Helix.

Filter does exactly what it’s advertised, pulls out all the color in broadband targets from light polluted skies

I purchased the 2 inch. Cuts out light pollution, sure. Also cuts out color and visible light. When using I notice my star field looks a bit like a tunnel. Mostly noticeable before you crop your photos. I used the L Pro for a bit but didn’t do as well of a job on the light pollution but let’s you capture more natural colors.

I use this filter in all my imaging sessions other than those requiring specialized filters, like H alpha. It produces a slight bluish hue that I like. Seems to be working perfectly well in my suburban environment.

This is a very high quality optic filter. I use it in the filter box on my Zwo533mc pro camera for my RASA8 at f2 imaging setup. It just works great. I shoot from my back patio in bortle 8-9 washed out sky .

The filter works well from my Bortle 6 backyard as the attached picture of the Andromeda Galaxy shows. I would highly recommend this filter for imaging with small refractors like the Radian Raptor 61 or William Optics RedCat 71.
