CAREFUL!! THIS ITEM CAN CAUSE HARM!! I have two birds and ordered this nutcracker so that I can crack fresh nuts for them. It was cute and seemed perfect since my birds like looking out their window and watch the wild squirrels in our yard. At first, it seemed to be made good. It has a nice few ounces of weight to it, and it is a nice size nutcracker. The problem with this nutcracker was discovered when we used it to crack nuts. No, I'm not joking. My mom was the one who used it for the first time. Lucky she is always a safe person or this nutcracker would have cut her badly. When this nutcracker cracks, it splits open very slightly from the squirrel's head and down the whole body (along the seams). My mother placed her hand on the squirrel's head for leverage when she pushed the tale down to crack a nut. After cracking a handful of nuts for our birds, she felt and realized that the squirrel's head split open. If she hadn't moved her hand in time, it would have pinched her. The scary thing is, the only way to get this thing to split open again is to crack another nut. This nutcracker would have no doubt cut my mother if she hadn't felt that the squirrel's head and body split open, and if she hadn't moved her hand away before it closed on her hand. We placed tape all along the seams of the squirrel and tied the tale down so that this nutcracker can not be easily used. It's cute to keep it as a decoration. I plan to paint it and place a ceramic nut in the squirrel's little hands. I also plan on gluing the tale in place. I think, if you already have one, (at the very least) don't let kids use this nutcracker, and be very careful if you choose to use it.
