The bushing on my 13 escape broke and I replaced it with this. Although it does read the gears, when you go from r -> n -> d, or form s -> d, it feels loose, pretty much what I had a problem with the old broken bushing, except this time it reads the gears but still feels loose. Park and drive are the only ones that you have to push the button to shift out of, every other gear feels loose so if you’re buying this, only use this as a temporary way while your original part comes in.

Imagine coming out of the grocery store, putting the car in drive to go home, and nothing happens. That's what happens if the connecting rod from the shifter becomes disconnected from the transmission. It's happened often enough that Ford has issued a recall to do this replacement. But you can do it yourself, even after you are stranded, in just a few minutes with minimal tools. If your hands are small enough, you might be able to reach it and do the job with no tools. Of course, that's only IF you prepared for it by buying this kit and have it ready to go stowed in the glovebox or elsewhere in the vehicle. My vehicle has already had the recall replacement performed in the attached photos so the parts look slightly different, but they are identical to the parts in this kit except for color. Under the black cap in the photo (white cap in kit) is the round bushing that connects the yellow end of the shifter cable to a post on the transmission shifter arm. It just snaps on so no tools are required. If the old bushing breaks, the cable comes off the post. If you have the replacement kit on hand, you just remove any remnants of the old bushing, push the new one in, and snap it back on. The cover only protects the bushing underneath from oil, etc. to make it last longer. No tools needed for the actual installation. The tools will likely be needed to give you room to get to the part, unless you have really small hands. The photos were taken without any parts being moved or removed so you can find it easily. But for most people, you will need to remove the air box to reach it. And that just requires loosening the air ducting clamps to pull them off the box and remove it. Relatively easy to do with basic tools even in a parking lot.And that's just how I learned about this on the Transit Connect forums. Another owner was stranded and got on the forums to ask for help before calling a tow truck. Someone had the problem before, and even knew the part number. The stranded owner got a ride to the local parts store which luckily had the part in stock, came back to the car and installed it, and was back on the road about 2 hours after first asking for help. That's why I got one of these repair kits. It's cheap insurance and an easy fix if it happens. I think I'll keep my spare in the stowage compartment under the passenger's seat. The hardest part will be remembering that is where I put it.
