I use this to store my ice in ,& the wooden hammer makes it very convenient to break up the ice. Much better than my freezer bags

This is just what was advertised, this what we see but used a meat cleaver and tenderizer. Take a few bags to get the job set down. The grinding of ice is a little bit of a hassle. The effort is payed back by the smooth smoke. The idea of there is more surface area exposed to the hot smoke, this cools down the smoke In my opinion the effort of grinding ice is paid back in full by the cool smoke that is received by the smoker. One of the first things I did t the mallet is rub it down with a few coats of oil. I would very loosely rub down in. Oil wait 24=hours and do again , 3 times.

There are probably machines that crush ice just as well or maybe even better but there is nothing like of fun of pounding ice cubes in a bag with a wooden mallet.

Hey, I know this is just a wooden mallet and a canvas bag, but they're both well designed and made to do what they're supposed to do, perfectly.I've owned a few countertop ice crushers over the years, in addition to refrigerator/freezers with crushed ice dispensers in the door. The problems I discovered with the crushed ice dispensers in refrigerator/freezers is, the ice size is rarely consistent sized, resulting in some large chunks with smaller and a bit of what is similar to shaved ice. This is a problem for bartending or creating smoothies, because invariably the finer shavings or pieces melt far quicker than the larger chunks, which often still remain within a blended smoothie or the only pieces still frozen and banging around inside a martini shaker. The wooden mallet has a decent sized angled face on each side, making it so easy to land flat on the canvas bag with with ice cubes. I feel that simply adjusting the force of each blow and quantity of them, while conveniently feeling the ice within the bag, results in the most consistent crushed ice possible. If I want a more coarse crushed ice for taller drinks, I use fewer and less forceful whack of the mallet on the ice in the bag. Smack it a few more times and you've got little pieces of crushed ice, along with finer pieces that are closer to shaved ice, which are ideal for smaller iced drinks. The added plus is, it gets rid of any pent up frustration fairly quickly! The crushed ice doesn't stick to the thick canvas bag, from which the crushed ice is easily removed, and can be turned inside out to dry fairly quickly. If I'm using this a few times in a night, I may choose to alternate with it turned inside out, after the first use, so it's nice a dry where the ice comes in contact with the bag, allowing it to be more easilt removed and dry through fairly rapid natural evaporation.I know this is a very basic product, but it does what it's supposed to do, very well, and I'm pleased with this purchase that will likely outlast me!

Now you can pummel that ice like Thor would! The mallet and bag are slightly smaller dimensions than some other brands in the same price range, but just very slightly, so that's probably mostly up to personal preference. This one is decent sized and you can crush enough ice for around 2 drinks at a time with no major inconvenience. (or 1 drink if you're doing something ice-heavy, like juleps.. the sweet spot is probably one standard freezer-tray of ice at a time)Mallet is good quality; I've swung it around pretty hard and I don't have any concerns about the head flying off or anything due to the way it is designed, and the bag is a decent weave and hasn't left any stray fibers in the end product. I've had it for several months now and have not experienced any tears or frays. The biggest problem is, if you sneak downstairs for a nightcap after everyone is asleep, you can't go bashing out your frustrations on the ice at 11:30 at night without people waking up and questioning your antics. But that is also not a product-specific issue and no fault of the bag or mallet. Easily fixable by a quick trip to the basement or garage.
