This H128 Thermal Camera from Ampbank is easy to use. There is a quick start guide inside the package but the settings are straightforward enough that the manual isn’t essential. The onscreen menu allows you to select units (F vs C), emissivity, and measuring distance. The on-screen menu also provides access to the saved image files. This Thermal Camera has a claimed NETD (Noise Equivalent Temperature Difference) of 40mk, indicating that it does a better job than average in separating the true temperature measurements from the background “noise”. The thermal detector (Bolometer array) in this Ampbank unit provides 128x128 resolution; that is then “upscaled” to 240x240 using their TISR feature, which makes the screen image appear sharper to the user.To get a sense for the accuracy of this specific Thermal Camera, I took a few test measurements, using the default 0.95 emissivity setting and a measurement distance of 0.5m. First, I put ice cubes + tap water in a plastic bowl, stirred well and allowed the temperature to equilibrate for about 5 minutes. This creates a classic “ice bath” which should maintain a stable temperature of 32F, at least until all the ice cubes have melted. I took multiple measurements, aligning the target on the center of the camera screen with slightly different spots in the bowl: my four measurements ranged from 31.5F to 32.9F (~32.2 +/-0.7F). I also looked at an 18V battery charger that was in operation. While the battery itself and most of the battery charger’s case were at ambient temperature, the vents on the charger were releasing warm air, which is easily seen in the thermal camera’s display. The camera indicated 96.9F at the hottest spot on the charger’s top vent and I was able to verify that temperature through direct measurement with a digital thermocouple. So, at least for temperatures below 100F, I was able to directly verify that this camera meets its claimed accuracy of +/-2C (+/-3.6F).After taking measurements, I used the included USB cord to test transferring image files to my Windows PC. Note that the unit needs to be off for the transfer function to work. When I plugged it into the USB Port, Windows 11 immediately recognized a new device and I was able to access the file folders on the camera. The files are stored in jpg format and can be copied from the camera to a file folder on the PC using Windows File Explorer. I was also able to delete the original files from camera-memory using File Explorer.

This AMPBANK thermal camera is such a useful and easy to use tool. It's working out great for us for use on vehicles and what not. I'm honestly surprised by all the scenarios I have found to use it in since I received it. I love how easy it is to use and operate and I wasn't left trying to find videos on how to use it or anything, which has happened with numerous other electronics and tools that I've ordered in the past. At the time of my review, it is listed for $199.99, and after doing some research on other, comparable thermal cameras, and given the features and usability of this camera, I feel it's worth the investment. I've been using it for several months now with no issues and like I mentioned above, it has come in handy for such a wide variety of things I hadn't even intended it for.

I've been wanting a thermal camera for a long time but never wanted to splurge on one. I decided to order this Ampbank handheld thermal camera and give it a try.You have to hold the power button down for a long time (yes, these days 6 seconds seems like a long time ;-) before it powers on. Then I walked around my home measuring everything. And to my surprise I discovered a hot spot on one wall. There is nothing there, a closet on the other side of the wall. I went looking through some old construction photos I took when the house was built. At that exact spot was a hot water pipe connection. Where I live the water lines are run underground with soft copper, but all joints or connections have to be above ground. For an unknown reason the original plumbers ran the hot water line up inside the wall here, and split it off to run two directions. Not the cold water, just the hot. No idea why.So that's what the photo shows, the thermal image on the left, and the old construction photo on the right. To my hand I can't feel anything, but the thermal camera saw it.TISR = Thermal Image Super Resolution. It is a method of resolution enhancement to increase the 128x128 pixel image to 240x240. The native 128x128 IR sensor is in the midrange in terms of overall sensitivity. Higher resolution IR cameras are quite a bit more expensive. The 25 Hz frame rate is quite good though. The USB-C plug is on the top and can be used to transfer photos from the device to your computer. Pictures are taken by clicking down the trigger button. The only thing missing is a case. While the camera is "drop rated," I prefer to not verify that claim so I will be looking for a case to store it.Overall this is an excellent handheld thermal camera at a very reasonable price. Highly recommended.

This camera is quite user-friendly and offers a nice range of palettes for displaying pictures, making it easier to discern details. The ability to switch between palettes is also notably straightforward. When I demonstrate the camera to others, they often express interest in using it for ghost hunting. However, one observer pointed out that heat signatures are visible even in reflections, casting a new light on how thermal imaging is perceived in ghost hunting.A favorite demonstration of mine involves showing how environmental temperatures appear warmer until I introduce my fingertip into the view. Suddenly, the surroundings appear cooler, with only the fingertip registering as warm.I explain that the display indicates relative heat, with colors representing the spectrum of temperatures detected in the scene. Fortunately, the camera includes an on-screen temperature scale, aiding in the accurate interpretation of the thermal images. If you are new to this, play around with the camera and learn the nuances of how temperature is displayed. Not only is it fun, but you find new applications for it all the time!
