I've tried several "weeder" tools for my garden, starting with those hand operated ones that require you to stoop down and slip a disc (no bueno). I eventually coughed up some dough for a Fiskars brand one. Literally every other tool I had purchased from that brand had been top notch, so it would surely be good, right? Nope. Pure garbage. That dinky plastic thing had difficulty penetrating hard soil and didn't grip the roots well at all.Frustrated, I finally decided to give this Grampa's one a try. Being made entirely of metal, it looked quite sturdy. Well, I can confirm that this thing talks the talk and walks the walk. The sturdy, strong metal construction easily penetrates hard soil with its thick metal spikes and produces crazy torque to pull even the most stubborn weeds right out, roots and all.I have a problem with Ash trees constantly sprouting up all over yard and, let me tell you, those things are no joke to remove. Nothing would reliably do the trick until I pulled out Ol' Gramps here. It had been raining for the past 3 days. so the soil was admittedly soft, but it was able pull out some really stubborn saplings. Just remember to have a wheelbarrow or cart nearby to toss all of the pulled weeds into. The only real work you have to do with this thing is to pull the extracted weed off the tool, shake off the excess soil and toss it in your 'barrow/wagon.It just goes to show that the materials in tools matter. Thin, stamped steel is no replacement for heavy, cast or forged steel. Thick steel bars are best, followed by hard wood or thick aluminum, then thin gauge metal and finally (god forbid) plastic junk. This time-tested tool is easy to use, works amazingly well and makes quick work of stubborn weeds. I love it.

I would buy from this company again. It's a very nice and heavy product. I thought that kind of quality was gone but they are providing it. LOVE IT

This is actually my second Grandpa's Weeder. Not because the other one broke but because when my husband and I are both outside working, it's the one tool we keep swiping from the other over and over. This tool is single-handedly my favorite garden tool. I have a vegetable garden, several large flower beds, and about an acre of land...I use this a lot. It has been invaluable for pulling weeds, especially thistles. Center it, press it into the ground, and tilt. It's so easy! I don't get poked with spines, and the only bending over I need to do is to pick up the removed weed and toss it into a yard waste bag. My husband likes it for dandelions. The only plant that has given us trouble with it are golden rods - it plucked the new ones easily but the root systems are so extensive on the established plants that have spread that even our tiller struggles. You can see from the photos that even after several years of use across three seasons, the wooden weeder still looks new - so I've been very pleased with the value and durability. To compare the two styles, this metal one comes in three pieces and are screwed together. I kinda wish there was an option to buy another section to make a longer handle but that's just a dream of a tall person. The handle sections are very strong and thick walled. The metal version is MUCH heavier than it's wooden counterpart. I know some people may not like that, but I have a weak ankle so the extra heft lets gravity help a lot more when stepping on the tool. Functionality wise, the claw for pulling weeds is identical. I really enjoy having a soft, rubber handle at the end of this one.

I am really impressed with how well made this weed puller is! It is made entirely of metal (except for the spongy padding on the handle and the covers over the areas where the metal pipes are screwed together) and weighs a hefty 10 1/2 pounds. The instructions are really easy to understand but I watched the video, too, just in case it had some good tips. The pipes screw together easily without tools. When put together the length is about 42" so I only had to bend a bit to use it (at 5' 6") but a 6' tall friend said it was just too short for him to use comfortably because he had to bend a LOT to get the claw on the bottom to grab the weed. That may be, but I think bending over was still a lot easier than kneeling and digging each and every weed out with a trowel. I kept a bucket nearby and was able to hold the weed inside the claw long enough to get to the bucket and then let the weed fall in.The horizontal lever where my foot goes (called the footpad in the directions) is about 5 1/2" long so I had plenty of room to rest my boot when pushing the claw into the ground. Not many weeds around this time of year but I found a few to test this gadget. I think it will be very handy to have when summer comes and various weeds flourish in the lawn. I prefer to pull weeds rather than use weed killer because the kids and the dog are always running around the yard.
