This eTrex SE is designed to be used with a smartphone. The large coloured display shows very well on the phone's screens. It tracks, navigates, logs tracks, and shows North on the compass all on the smart phone's screens. Its clear and works as described. This was used for a three(3) days Backpacking trip and any way-point or additions to the smart phone screen will instantly sync with the eTrex and vice versa. For three days continuous use, the battery did not even drop one bar of power. Also, Rechargeable batteries can be used with the eTrex SE and this device was used with 2 two(2) NiMH Rechargeable batteries and it worked just perfect. While it can be used as standalone, the larger phone screen was a better extension and this eTrex SE was designed for a Bluetooth attachment to a smart phone. On the smart phone are coloured tracks, and a better interface. This eTrex SE was just clipped to my belt and the other manipulations were done on the phone. At a price less that $200, its a must have for the backpacking enthusiast.Should the smart phone fail, then the eTrex SE can be used by itself as a navigation tool, albeit, a little clumsy for navigation purposes all by itself, but, it will work just fine.if you're looking for a standalone GPS, then this is not for you. One of the more expensive ones of $800 can be used as a standalone. For the rest of us, who already is using the phone as a camera and video logger, the device is already in your hands. The addition of the GPS is just another extension. The Garmin Explore App would need to be installed and updated before venturing out.I also purchased the belt clip separately. It was not sold as a part of the package.

Preis/Leistung stimmen.

The device is useful. It would be more useful if the Garmin Express software was available thru the Mac App Store. Garmin's website tells me Express can be downloaded directly from Garmin. I've previously made the mistake of installing non Mac App Store apps on my Macs. If Garmin Express is not good enough for the Mac App Store then Express is not good enough for me. I can make do without it though I'm beginning to regret this purchase.

Bought this little thing and was unsure what it was. Got the app to go with it. Looks great, fits perfect in a pocket. The battery life is amazing. Very accurate, kept us from getting lost on one of our rides. And a great value. Super simple to use.

It is very small GPS with an adequate view screen. The buttons, need to be pressed in the center, and are a bit stiff. It took a while to get used to the menus and buttons. Within a day of taking it out on a trail, It became easier to operate. Downloaded the manual from Garmin since the manual that comes with it is just a few pages.I paired it to a large screen phone. It works flawlessly with the phone. You get to see a nice trail map with elevation reading and all waypoints along the trail. The GPS lacks an elevation history page. The map on the GPS is really useless but the electronic compass works perfectly. Several other pages on the GPS give you ample information. This is a back-up for my other Garmin GPS... I found it small but extremely useful and accurate.Hooked it up to a phone at the end of the day and downloaded the information to my phones. The phone has a big nice map. Since I need to carry a phone, linking the two together is easy. If I need extra information I just bluetooth to my phone in seconds. For the cheapest GPS Available it a very good buy.

after first trip:+ simple and easy to use+ very good screen visibility in sun+ very fast location finding (gps)+ working on regular battery AA- size, not bad at all but it could be little bit lighter and smaller, "fat" in pocketOverall i am very happy to us it and i don't think there is a better product like that.

This GPS receiver is pretty obviously aimed at a subset of the usual customer community, so you'll want to make sure you know what it can / can't do before jumping at its great price. You do not get a color screen, or fancy graphics that you'd get with a $300+ unit, or even on your smart phone. What you do get is a pocketable GPS with super-long battery life (far better than any phone's), support for all existing navigation networks (GPS and Galileo and Glonass -- at the cost of reduced battery lifetime), and some broadly-useful core functions. It's great for old-school (pre-smartphone) geocaching, or orienteering, or hiking. My only real complaints so far (having just received the unit) are with the user interface / documentation. The menu system is classic Garmin, a bit "clunky." Digging through the manual isn't much better, since the unit and its manual both use... unique... terms for some things, and they're not explicitly defined anywhere.I bought the unit primarily for geotagging photos -- I need it to record a log of my path that I can later save to a GPX file. As far as my interface to the eTrex SE, this means I most often want to turn on / turn off logging and then save the data -- but doing this takes a relatively deep dive in the menus. Deeper than I'd like it to be, at any rate.I'll update this review after I put some miles on this gadget (and so can speak semi-intelligently to its actual battery life and accuracy), in the meantime, here are some terms to know as you start using the device or perusing its manual:Activity -- a recorded GPS track. You can have the device start recording automatically based on your motion, or do it manually (with some effort). You'll need to dive into the menus to end the activity / save a file in either case, so you might as well get used to this path.Course -- a pre-defined path you would subsequently like to follow. A course is defined by a series of "Locations," also called "Course Points" by the device / manual (most folks would probably call them "waypoints").Expedition Mode -- a low-power mode to extend battery life. Bluetooth is turned off, your track is recorded less often.

I remember the classic garmin legend, fairly basic but had everything you wanted, this unit is an update of that unit, does everything you would expect and more. But has one or two issues, the internal memory is poor and lacks one or two functions, however for the price very good value.

I have been looking for an accurate GPS driven compass for use on a tractor. Thought this might work well.It did not work at all and is obviously NOT a GPS driven compass. I carefully calibrated the compass while standing away from all objects.South was reasonable accurate. North was off by 10 degrees and east/west off by 20+ degrees.I had the compass/unit pointing south and as soon as I got near the tractor it spun and indicated a heading of West despite the unit still being pointed south.I know this is more intended to be used on your person, but the compass is easily influenced by any metal object. Even my wristwatch would throw it off. Will be returning as it is not at all accurate.

Overall, the device has been working out well for my family while geocaching. I also have the newest 67map model and attached photos for perspective. These two units have their pros and cons. I like how simple and easy the etrex se is to use once you get the menu and settings figured out. It’s been solid/reliable… the 67 has been a little glitchy. The etrex se has a very clear and readable monochrome display compared to the color MIP screen on the 67. I highly recommend the etrex SE wanting a basic and affordable GPS unit. Oh, forgot to mention, the antenna on this unit is just as good if not better than the 67. I like that the batteries are replaceable unlike the sealed one on the 67.
