Had the wireless indoor/outdoor models. Lasted only a few years and had to change batteries often. What can one expect when asking for a thermometer and radio (kind of) for that much money.Change to this wired model and am much happier. Works flawlessly, big display and requires very battery power. Don't care about the hole in the wall - was easy to drill. Highly recommend this over the wireless options.

Nice large easy to read numbers. Varies 1-2 degrees with our other favorite thermometer when side by side. But we are not needing exact thermometer readings, just like to know the inside outside temps so we can work the house for heating and cooling.

Extech Digit Thermometer -401014: Necessity for me because in Iowa, the weather changes constantly. It can go from 60 degrees to 40 degrees in a matter of a day. It could be 90 degrees one day and raining cold the next day. Iowa's weather is weird like that; constantly changing. So, I have this thermometer which tells you the inside of your apartment/house temperature and it also tells you the outside temperature. Sometimes, when it's cold outside, I want the inside to be just warm enough, and if it is hot outside, I want it to be cold enough inside. I am picky about what temperature I want my apartment to be, so this is perfect to have and it's hanging near the entrance door where I can see it every time I go outside.

I had this exact same unit sitting in my kitchen window for over 20 years. The LCD digits finally started going bad. I like the attached probe that sits outside my north facing window. Great display size that is readable from a distance and a decent side angle. Readings appear to be accurate. 1 aaa battery lasts for a couple years. Was thinking of going wireless but this setup is so simple and I don’t have to worry about protecting a wireless sender from the harsh outdoor winter elements around here.

Mostly an excellent device, but as anything mass produced things can go bad. We had one simply failed to work after having worked for a week. Thus 1 star deducted. Has a clear very nice display and comes with a 6 foot cable for it's external sensor.

This worked fine, until the moment it didn't. The display started getting a little dim. Probably a low battery, so I installed a new one. Nothing. No display at all. I opened the unit up and spent some time with meter, oscilloscope, and microscope. No broken connections, no bad solder joints, voltage getting to the right places. So it was not a battery problem or a broken wire. Some component just up and died. Of course, we're out of warranty. So although it has a nice large and readable display, and seemed relatively accurate compared with other thermometers here, it is now a paperweight. I revived my 20-year old Radio Shack unit and it is now back on the wall, while this Extech has taken its rightful place in the junk bin. At this price, I would expect a more reasonable life.

This is a very accurate thermometer, similar to one I bought years ago (different brand) that finally quit. I like the large digits because I can read them across the room. I compared readings from this thermometer to temperatures reported by a nearby monitoring station for the National Weather Service. I checked numerous times throughout the day, on a day when temperatures were rapidly dropping, and this thermometer exactly tracked the reported readings every time I checked. Very impressive! These "wired" thermometers work better than those with remote transmitters and are more reliable. EXTECH seems to make high-quality equipment. In the photo, this unit has a green color. The green part on the unit I got is actually a very dark green that almost looks black -- very attractive. This is a great value, and I highly recommend it.

I'm a hard-nosed, critical reviewer, but this is one fine unit. Here are just some of the plusses:You can easily see the display, even from across the room. It's accurate and responds well to temperature changes. The min-max works intuitively.Using a wired probe means that you don't have to putter with an outdoor broadcasting unit. It also means that you don't have to keep changing batteries, especially in the outdoor, weather and cold exposed unit as in the wireless indoor-outdoor thermometers.Extech also makes an indoor-outdoor hygrometer-thermometer which is the best in its category, too. (See my review of that one for more information.)Their units are well built, accurate, easy to use, and easy to read. All around 5-star recommended. In case anyone's wondering, I have no connection with the company nor was some unit sent to me for review. After much research and many purchases of other indoor-outdoor devices, I determined theirs to be best suited to our household needs.
