I have my house set up to back-feed with a portable generator in case of power outages. This setup is much cheaper than a whole-house standby generator. You need one of these (or the 50 A version depending on your design) plus a mechanical interlock and incomer 2-pole CB for your panel. Be sure to get something like this with a male receptacle. There are some setups with female power inlets but they are generally not safe.

When you add a generator to your power system you need to:1. Connect your generator to your electrical panel2. Disconnect your panel from external power. This unit solves #1, but you’re still left to provide a method to disconnect your system so you’re not trying to energize your entire neighborhood. In fact, most codes require some form of positive interlock so you CANNOT feed power into a connected circuit.

I like the look and feel Says it supports wire as heavy as 4 awg. But 4 guage is so heavy that it is too hard to bend and work with - which I realized after my attempts. So, Wanting to get the highest amperage capacity that I could, I decided to go with double-8awg. Supposedly it has about the same power capacity, but bending and routing two 8 guage wires is much easier than single 4-guage. Still, I had to extend my wire lengths to make working with them managable, which is why the outlet box is about 10 inches to the right of the panel instead of right next to it like I had originally wanted.I drilled a couple of extra holes in the back of the box to accomodate my desired mounting screw locations.

I am someone who is comfortable with working on my own electrical panel, so installing this generator inlet box was not difficult. Please note that if you are hooking this up to your electrical panel, you must use a transfer switch or interlock kit so you don’t create a hazardous situation for utility workers working to restore power. If you don’t know what this is, hire an electrician. The inlet box feels to be good quality and comes with knock-out holes pre-drilled for 3/4in conduit connectors.I chose the L14-30 model because I’m using it with a 5000W 120/240V generator, which is powerful enough to run my well pump, furnace, lights, and several other important circuits. I already had a manual transfer switch with existing conduit and wiring run to my attached garage, but I store my generator in my detached workshop, and it is a long way to drag the generator all the way to the garage, especially with a foot of snow on the ground! I installed the inlet box on the side of the transfer switch and wired it in with some short pieces of 8awg wire I had left over from another project. Now I can just plug a heavy-duty L14-30 extension cord to the inlet box, plug the other end to the generator, and flip the transfer switch. As an added benefit, I was able to repurpose the existing wiring and conduit to run a 30A 240V circuit to my garage for anything I might need 240V for (garage heater, small welder, etc).

It's a really solid build, and all the difficult stuff like knockouts have been removed from the design. The internal grounds are already hooked up, only the house wiring coming in has to be connected. There's plenty of room in the box for the hookup wires too. The cover is weathersealed, and the inlet has provisions for both kinds of cord locks, screw or lugs. The metal is heavy and so is the paint. It even has a light to show when it has power, not sure why. I mean the house is never gonna send it power, and you just plugged a running generator into it, but anyway . . . Always interlock your panel -before- installing an inlet box! Aside from that one thing confusing me, it's a great power inlet. No flaws anywhere, just the one mystery. I installed mine where it will never see sunlight so I don't have to find out if the plastic breaks down in sun.I love it, what a great value!

Here in the south, we're about to get hit with yet another storm! I bought us a generator, and using this Inlet Box, I can hardwire (sort of) the generator into our homes electrical system! The box itself is very sturdy and well made. I went with a 50 amp unit, even though our generator isn't quite that capacity. I did this for future upgrades (no, I am not using a larger breaker than the generator supports).I'm hoping to have the rest of the bits to get everything connected and tested BEFORE the next storm hits! This inlet box is a crucial piece for a solid and safe installation! Of all of the choices out there, this Boyisen is a good choice!

This is a nice generator inlet box. It's made of metal, so it won't break or deteriorate outside as easily as a plastic box. It also comes with the grounding pre wired. Both metal pieces of the box and the inlet have grounding wires ran to them, so all you have to do is connect your grounding wire to a single ground lug. The inlet also has the wire holes colored, so you can't mess up your wiring unless you're color blind and can't read the letters that are on it as well. Make sure to install this with either a transfer switch or an interlock kit so that there is no possibility of it being energized from the power company's power and being able to shock anyone who touches the prongs. That and so the generator and the power company's power can't be on at the same time. Interlock kits are usually easier for existing electrical systems, but I'd recommend a transfer switch if you're wiring up a new house and you want it to have a generator inlet. The electrical box has plenty of room for your wires to bend and be worked with, so I recommend this box and inlet.
