Best uke strings I’ve ever used.

If you’re used to fluorocarbon strings, these will seem thin and quite rough. That’s great for confident fretting as the texture grips your finger tips a little compared to the smoother fluorocarbon or synthetic gut. The relative thinness also makes them feel “faster” if that makes sense. The tone is still surprisingly deep, and the sustain is terrific. All that said, these strings can be very squeaky, especially across your thumb on the fourth string. Moisturizer on the hands before practice helps, and I’m told by more experienced players that the squeakiness goes away eventually.Give them a try.

I had manufacturer installed Aquila nylagut strings on my ukulele, and they were OK, but I really didn't have a basis of comparison because I hadn't tried anything else. I just knew that after a couple of months of continuous practice, they didn't seem to feel any more comfortable than when I first got my uke. I assumed based on everything I read that after my fingers "toughened up" they would feel better.... but no difference that I could tell. Then I decided that I wanted a low G string, so I went on the hunt and found an unwound low G Aquila red available at a local music shop near me. I was leery because in theory, this string being unwound would have been a larger gauge than the C string on my current instrument. This also meant that it would be even thicker, stiffer, and harder to fret than the C. But since I wanted to try low G, I installed it. As far as the gauge, the low G was exactly the same size as my existing C string, but I was immediately impressed with the "softness" of this string, and how much easier it was to fret than the other nylagut strings, particularly C & E.So... I decided to purchase the entire set of Aquila Red's, and what a tremendous difference! The strings are so much softer and easier to fret than the nylagut. They have a slightly smaller gauge, because they are infused with copper particles which increases the density of the material, so these strings are manufactured thinner than the nylagut strings. Not by much, but the slight variation makes a huge difference on the fingertips. In comparison to other Aquila strings I own, here are the actual measurements based on my own readings with a mm guage, not what is printed/advertised by the company: Measurements of the strings are as follows:Aquila Red: (g) .58mm, (c) .78mm, (e) .64mm, (a) .51mm, Low (G) .89mmAquila Nylagut: (g) .62mm, (c) .89mm, (e) .78mm, (a) .60mmAquila Graphite Gray: (g) .60mm, (c) .81mm, (e) .73mm, (a) .58mmThe strings do have a slightly "gritty" texture, and it does take a little getting used to. This is supposed to wear off over time, but I have been using my ukulele daily for about 3 months since installing the strings (anywhere from 5 minutes to 1 hour/day) and I haven't notices any reduction in the texture. I play mostly fingerstyle, so the strings may not be getting as much abrasion as someone who is primarily strumming. Then grit does produce a scratchy sound against your fingers in fingerstyle, not so much to detract from the music, but it is there. All in all, I do really like these strings, and I like that I am able to have a low G instrument where the strings are all made of the same material. Full disclosure, in the image my instrument is strung with low G, and backwards (I'm a lefty)! The lighter colored string on the far right is the low G Aquila Red, and not part of the set purchased for this review.

These lovely mellow strings sound great on both my solid wood high-end ukes and even make the cheap little ukes my 4 and 5 year olds are learning on sound fantastic too. Recommended if you have bought a cheap uke to learn on to see if you like playing it - it will sound so much better than the fishing-line strings that often come standard on cheap ukes.

I've been playing ukulele for about 7 months, I have a Kala MaKala and an off-brand and a super cheap. I'm hard on strings because I bang on my Makala alot and drag it everywhere. I replaced my Makala strings with Low C red series and wow they look beautiful they feel beautiful even my husband remarked how smooth and how good the sound is gosh I couldn't say enough I just think that after trying other brands I'm going to put this on my other ukes, I highly recommend Red Series.

I have purchased and used over a dozen sets of these red strings for my soprano ukuleles and for my concert ukulele. They are smaller diameter, than the Aquila white strings that I used to use, therefore the sound is brighter (smaller diameter) and they have copper added to the string, therefore they are denser. So thinner and denser makes a brighter clearer better vibrating string. On my concert uke the difference was night and day because the longer concert strings were also thicker (than soprano) strings and thus I felt my concert uke sounded "dead" relative to my sopranos. When I put these strings on the concert uke came alive. Also, they stay in tune much better than any other material, and I have tried them all. They last forever, but after a year I change them just on principle. I also give ukuleles to people, each time I take off the new strings and put on a set of these Aquila Red strings. I wouldn't even give someone a ukulele without these good strings. I am buying several more sets today. Bravo Aquila for inventing a great improvement on strings!

These strings have such a sweet tone. If you are looking for a very sweet, colorful, but not bright or sharp sound, I would really recommend these. The strings themselves are an attractive deep red, almost burgundy hue. The makeup of the strings is such that there is not as much difference in thickness between the strings as you find in many sets. They are pretty flexible, and seem to require a good break in period or stretch before they will stay in tune. But you're patience will be rewarded with the beautiful sound of these strings.

I don't particularly understand the difference between high G and Low G, and the difference between normal nylgut, super nylgut and their red series, but it's a very cool set of strings and they came very quickly, so I would recommend this
